Resigned...
May. 2nd, 2006 08:28 amStephen Pound, my MP, was on the radio yesterday suggesting Prescott has to go.
This is actually an extremely interesting turn of events, as he was being interviewed about how Charles Clarke should not go.
For those who are not familiar with our erstwhile MP for Ealing North, Pound is the type of MP who really understands on which side his bread is buttered. There's not a party line that he's not happy to trot out at a moments notice on TV. He recently replied to an email I sent him about ID cards, here's what he had to say:
While I understand your concerns about the IT elements, I increasingly believe that we must join our European partners in having a national ID system...
As a piece of distortion, this goes down, at least in my mind, with Clarke's comment on people not needing a passport. Stephen Pound is a man who shows every sign of having had his fill of cool aid.
But then he disses John Prescott? Well, the simple fact is, of course he does. While I have no trouble believing that Two Jags is a bufoon, a thoroughly unpleasant person and probably a nightmare to work for - he has also been a pain in the Prime Minister's side. Strategically, having the news break of Prescott's affair at this time is just too "pat" for me. Clarke is in real trouble. If there was anybody else with the agressive reputation available to easily drive the home office, then this wouldn't be such a problem. Apparently John Reid is being prepped for a post-election reshuffle, but Reid isn't as popular, as I understand it, in cabinent as Clarke.
To have the news of the affair break like this and have ultra-loyal party hacks start calling on John to fall on his sword is just too convenient. Sometimes, conspiracies are just cockups. This time, I have a feeling that we're watching a terribly well crafted piece of political theatre, where a knight is being cunningly sacraficed to save the rook.
