Some interesting ideas emerging on the other thread.  At some stage in the next couple of days I'll pull out some specific proposals so people can look at them.  I have noticed the Blogging community have, for the most part, been quiet on this topic.

The "blogging community" (by which I mean the new blogging community) is admittedly ignorant of livejournal.

Yes, well, I'm not locking it and I'm not blocking anonymous commenting either, and I cannot be arsed to set up a Blog for this nor a group on one of the other fora. I *might* think about a Google+ Circle, but frankly I'm busy and this is the path of least resistant.

Seriously though, I know every generation thinks it's just discovered 'fandom' and something 'new' but doesn't repeating the same stuff every 7 or 8 years get very very tiring?

Every generation reinvents fandom rather than rediscovering it per se. Problem is, like the inhabitants of the B Ark and the wheel they spend an inordinate amount of time arguing about the number of corners it should have and what colour it should be.

There's also a degree of 'I'm not a Fan' declarations, along with a group of 'I am Spartacus' declarations about their fandom.

Meanwhile, life goes on :)

Just like there are people who organize conventions and get involved with convention politics who say, "Oh, I'm not a SMOF, I'm a conrunner." Thus I predict that the term "conrunner" will eventually collect any negative connotation that "SMOF" currently has, and the next generation will rubbish the "conrunners" while they themselves do the same functions and come up with a new term that they believe is ideologically pure.

I guess one of my problems is that I now have enough perspective to see the same arguments having been made over and over again with different paint schemes, and with me having been on both sides of them at times. The generation ahead of me is welcome to laugh and point and say, "Told you so, kid!" I deserve it. I look forward to my turn at revenge in a generation.

As a separate thought, and I think somebody else, maybe you made this point, there isn't something in the Blogging world that fills the role of LJ, where you can have public and private blogging with simple real-time update notifications...

Livejournal is a blogging platform that was extended to have a social infrastructure. It's that simple. First it was multiple blog hosting, then it was blog following (friends) then it was multi-participant discussion (communities). It didn't get a lot of respect from roll-your-own bloggers, but it's just another tool. Now it's totally just another tool, with very few bloggers rolling their own solution but still looking down on LJ if they even know about it.

Where other tools fall flat on ongoing Hugo recommendations is:
1. Structure. FB, G+, Twitter and the other large-subscriber services don't provide a good structure to file (managed tagging) and search recommendations over time.
2. User base. There is no other structured service that already has a large number of fans participating. It would be possible to build a new service that took advantage of Google and/or Facebook identities, but it would be a new, standalone service that people would have to add to their sphere of interaction. And it would likely end up just being another web forum, even if it had tweaked interface and features.
