I may have mentioned that about 4 weeks ago the puppy broke her foot.  It was a fairly clean break and the vet was perfectly happy that the foot would heal and young Tara would be non the wiser.  Anyway, 4 weeks have crawled by and we had our 7th follow up today with added X-Rays.

The Good News: break is healing well and looks to be nice and straight and not requiring any surgery.

The Not Good News: she'll need the splint for another 2 weeks.  The skin infection that apparently thrives under tightly wound bandages in warm humid weather is thriving even under the onslaught of 2 weeks of antibiotics.

So, another $400 bill, another e-collar (she's on her 4th since we started) and another two weeks of drugging our cute little lab puppy morning and night.

This really does suck.

Ooooh, nasty. Nellie had stitches in a wound break down at least once in hot weather. I forget which one (all have been minor apart from the 3000 pound plus broken tendon). The most recent time I took her to the vet the vet said 'I was going to say it will leave a scar but...' (tailed off [as it were] and chuckled slightly).

She's really unhappy about it which is probably the worst thing. She's only 1 and for a retriever not to be able to, well, retrieve, it's a nightmare. Plus when they re-do the split she's in a lot of pain for the next few hours.

Anyway, 2 weeks to go.

[livejournal.com profile] celestialweasel does not mention the time Dash(dog passim)'s tail wound infection didn't clear up and they had to lop the end off - NOT nice - poss. as is part of spine, it was the only time we've seen a dog suffer significant post-op pain & we've seen quite a bit of chopping over the years. Part of the problem with him may have been that he'd been on anti-bs bigtime for his lousy teeth a few years back & he was given the same for his tail - plus of course the blood supply to that area is not brilliant - and we hadn't taken him in *immediately* as greyhounds gouge themselves all the time and often it just heals up by itself.
Now we are quite cautious about gashes. And quite good at removing dressings, swilling with saline and re-dressing (it does help that greyhounds are fairly torpid & don't wriggle much!!!).
