Mostly Broken

Slinked off to bed at a fairly "conventional" 1am ish and woke feeling as bad as I have on the 2 previous mornings with the post-dawn stops.

Anyway, wrote the Space Camp Talk (12.30 - somebody PLEASE turn up)...

Had a fairly soft day yesterday.  Dragged myself out of bed for a debrief following the Friday night party, then, quite unexpectedly ended up in the bar at the Delta with Gaspode and Gaspoida for several hours telling each other tall stories about conventions and comparing notes on Fandom.  We also gave the occasional nod to @scalzi and @neilhimself who wandered past.

Had a chat to @neil... in the hotel elevator on Thursday if memory serves.

Anyway, spent the later part of the evening being the news reader in the Fanzine Lounge for the Hugo's.  Gosh.  Cheryl Morgan is unpopular in some circles, and best not to mention @scalzi either...

Still, venom prize was voted for Nial Harrisson's Twitter feed which made us all chuckle.

Tobessv has decided that he's obviously the new Young Gregg Pickersgill...

What would fandom be without a fight eh?

Are people still having the "It's not REAL fan writing if it's only on the Internet" mass debate?

In a word. Yes.

And if the lists I'm on are any judge, the fuss over the fanzine Hugo makes the Scalzi fuss look lightweight.

*One* fiction winner that is forward-looking science fiction. Is that too much to ask? :-p

Well, as I didn't do well with the non-novel list this year. And the novel that one was the only one I hadn't actually read, it's a bit of a challenge for me to disagree with you.

I thought Anathem was a lock myself.

"Exhalation" is a fine story, a fully deserving winner, and speculative fiction of a very refined kind. But it isn't connected to our world in any way. "Shoggoths in Bloom" is a good story, but obviously a historical and a pastiche; so, well-done, but I'd have preferred "The Gambler". "The Erdmann Nexus" is science fiction, but contemporary-set, having to do with contact with an enigmatic alien consciousness; in principle a theory that I like, but not an execution that I like. (Obviously this is the one that most baffles me.) Gaiman's win doesn't surprise me, but I'd been hoping for Anathem.

I thought Anathem was a worthy winner myself too. The Gaiman was the only one of the set I hadn't read and I'll admit that I'm not a massive fan of Neil's novels, and the win surprised me.

I have made a pack with myself that I'll do my best to actually read all the written nominees before next year.

Note: Pack = pact

Need more sleep now.
