Palm Treo 500v smartphone

Palm Treo 500v smartphone | Reg Hardware

We didn't technically work on the Palm model, but we have worked on the UI (which is not a Palm design, it's a new generic one from MS) - it's weird to finally see products shipping that you've been involved in since they were a concept on a Power Point.

To put that in perspective, that was December 2005...

I wish someone would make the phone I want... I want my Treo 650 with faster data, wifi and maybe a decent camera. It can't be that hard... But now Palm just keeps bringing out Windows Mobile devices and there's still not one that does wifi.

I'm vaguely tempted by the iPhone but I want a real keyboard and I'm not paying the price Apple is asking. I have an MDA Vario ii (Tytn or whatever its other name is) and it's buggy and crashy - just like the Orange Windows Mobile device was that I used years ago. I don't want a Palm with Windows on it, what's the point?

Meh.

Not wishing to sound like the Microsoft defence league (there really are lots of things they do wrong... like Vista)... but the problems with the HTC phones are a lot more to do with lousy build quality and poor software testing by HTC than the code that MS ships them. Their ability to introduce problems and bugs into a stable software stack, not to mention utterly unique unreproduceable ones is astounding. The truth is, and having said this I ought to probably friend's lock this, is they don't test remotely enough. We established recently in a 3 way meeting with them and a customer that they probably do about half the testing the customer would normally do before bringing a phone to market.

Likewise I'd say that the TytnII is no better even though, on paper, it rocks.

A lot of the stuff that HTC retrofit and get wrong is being put in the build from WinMo 6.1 which should help some quality, plus Qualcomm are becomming their preferred hardware partner and their hardware quality is infinitely better than TI or Marvel at the moment.

I've been really happy with my Samsung Blackjack. I don't like the, frankly, nasty things AT&T have done to it, and the AT&T network sucks (but I know from comparative personal testing it's them not the phone).
