25 - Storm Front: Book One of the Dresden Files - Jim Butcher

Having struggled with the TV series and having heard favourable things about the books, I thought I'd read the first one.

Not bad, not bad at all - a bit like the early Anita Blake stories without all the dreadful vampire and werewolf sex and politics.  Worth a look.

Dear god the writing is godawful. At least the Anita Blake stories have sex to distract one from it.

I didn't read it with an eye on the literary style. This is certainly the written euqivalent of a hamburger. I'll probably take a couple on the next flight.

It's possible the later books get worse though.

Another thing, I can actually take these on a plane without the weight penalty they'd slap on me for taking a Hamilton.

This leads me to consider, if we measured book sizes in "Hamiltons", would that make most novels a centi-Hamilton?

I wasn't really talking about style, per se, when I say the writing was execrable. I was talking about stupidities of plot, motivation, and character. There's only so much dumbness I can stand in one book, and Butcher blows the top right off that threshhold.

Interesting I didn't really have much of an issue with that in Storm Front, I've not tried anything else.
