So, getting away from people (singular) moaning about Loncon, I need to start thinking about my Hugo nominations.  The problem is, I've read very little this year and of what I have read, little has stuck out.

Novels:
Hmm...  I've been on proof reading a couple but as they're not published yet I can't pick those :) - I am tempted by The Great North Road, sure it was a giant potboiler and two novels welded together, but I liked it and it was a page turner.  Once I've checked it's eligability I certainly would like to do Ann Leckie's excellent Ancillary Justice, and I'm quite enjoying Lauren Buekes The Shining Girls.

I've read bug all short fiction, so there's not a lot I can do about that.

Fanzines - feeling on stronger ground here, I've actually read a few and have some thoughts.

Movie - Gravity.  No question.

TV, ahem, Best Dramatic Presentation Short Form...  Ok, so *that* Doctor Who episode has to be in there - really did enjoy that.  Then there's Season 1 of Real Humans - but it has been suggested that as no episode stands alone it ought to be a Long Form nomination.

Another thing - does An Adventure in Time and Space count?  Because that was excellent.

Out of curiosity, and because I'm relatively anal and it was lunch time, I thought I'd do an experiment with looking at airline prices over the next few months taking the baseline as a return trip to London.

Currently, tickets for August on BA direct are $1800 Economy, and $2500 Premium Economy.  I thought that made for an interesting baseline, so I was curious to see what 'bands' they had and when the breakpoints occurred so I could keep an eye out for movement.

As a contrast, flying to London tomorrow on BA direct is about $1800 and Premium Economy is $2600...  interesting isn't it?

The thing is, if you wanted, say, to go to England for Eastercon, then the Economy Fare is about $800 and the Premium Economy $1300...  which is close to what I paid for travelling in a couple of weeks.

Prices step up again in May, and then hit the August pricing, give or take 10 quid in mid-June.  My plan for the next week or two is to look at those mid-June prices and validate that they start to drop in line with those I'm seeing in May.  Summer flights from Seattle to London are weird.  While there are people flying for cruises, the bread and butter of the BA business is Microsoft and Boeing and their travel rates drop dramatically in August.  So... watch this space.

EDIT: BA will block your access to their pricing system pending a capture check if you do this too much :)
