I mentioned a few days ago that I had to unfriend a former co-worker for his statements about Islam and the Boston Bombers. I pointed out that good Christians (or at least self identified Christians) have committed acts of terror with, if not the support, but certainly the acquiescence of others.
He started IMing me on Skype after that, to explain to me that I needed to understand that Catholics weren't actually Christians and gave me a link to a US evangelical website which explains the differences between Christians and Catholics (http://www.diffen.com/difference/Catholicism_vs_Christianity)
It's worth a read, and in some respects is highly entertaining, especially how it glosses over the little issue that most Christians in the world are catholics. Anyway, I blocked him and gave him a short and 4 lettered explanation of how I didn't want to spend too much time educating him on things he was ignorant of. The website, in fact, is pretty much all that is wrong with a lot of American evangelicals when it comes to things like this. Father Pinot at St Edmunds would have ripped them a new one over the soppy thinking frankly. Here's an example. What Catholics believe is on the left.
Now, in case you aren't aware. Catholics also believe in the Resurrection and the Ascent into Heaven. So much so that there is an entire holy day of obligation surrounding the Ascension. It was even a day off school.
There's a lot more in there. Most, to be honest are like this, errors of omission rather than plain lies, but the intent seems clear that the site is designed to mislead people into believing things that aren't true. In the case of, let's call him Bob, it's obviously worked.
And this is at the core of my problem. Bob isn't a bad person. He's not even a stupid person. He's excellent at what he does. But he's not ever thought to question nor think about things that he believes are core to who he is, and he's not alone in that. I've blocked him from IMing me because I can't face the task of trying to educate him differently, besides, and this is the saddest thing. He doesn't want to learn.
