This would be my 5th CES... it' an odd show really. My first few were during the big downswing, so realistically I never saw it at the batshit crazy 150,000 people levels it was this week - especially with the Mobius taxi lines.
I flew down at 6am on Sunday so I could be there for the AT&T Hackathon before their, now essential, developer summit. This involved getting up at 4:30am, and even with sleeping for the entire flight, I must admit that at points it felt like there wasn't enough coffee in the world to deal with it.
At the last minute we decided to enter. AT&T are promoting a Health API set called mHealth and we thought we could do something that followed on from our Blood Donation App so we created an "In Case of Emergency" app which stored vital healthcare data in case of an emergency trip to hospital. We also worked out a release system for getting that data out of a locked phone via a web interface if the nominated Emergency Contact approved it. We didn't quite win, but we did get $1000 for the idea.
We also won an iPad 2.
We then took part in a Poker tournament sponsored by HTC. I may have mentioned that I consider myself to be an ok(ish) middle field poker player - I don't play enough and lack a degree of discipline not to play when I'm bored by it. That said, it took me about 3 re-buys to a) get used to playing again, b) get used to the style of play of the rest of the table. There were probably 2-3 who could play ok, and 2-3 who couldn't play. The ones who can't play are most dangerous, frankly, as they'll do unpredictable things and could get lucky. After the first few rounds I settled down and played a consistent and tight game, ending up as chip leader when the tables were consolidated. And, shockingly enough I made final table. There was a total pot of $640 for 1st and 2nd places, and I played a fairly conservative game, and let the shorter stacks mostly fight among the themselves until we were down to the last 3. The 3rd place person only had chips for a single blind and she went out on the next hand, leaving two of us to go head to head. However, we decided that the gentelmanly thing to do would be to split the pot as, to be honest, it was 12:30am, I had to be up at 6:30 and we were both knackered. Good night though and a good game.
Monday was a busy day of meetings and ended up with a number of amazing parties, including the Nokia Developer Party at the Playboy Club, followed by Nickleback at Rain (signing Karoke basically, awful songs, awful band) and then a tour around the insanely packed LMFAO gig at The Cosmopolitan which, frankly, I could have done without.
The rest of the show passed in a haze of meetings and the like. I might post about some of the stuff under a friends filter as there was a lot of stuff that I can't openly talk about.
