Well, after a lot of checking I've gone with the HP Home Media Server.  In some respects this is a royal PITA because I had other goals for the money, but I've a lot of digital media and the 1TB NAS I have seems to crash every few hours now and is taking longer to boot.  To be critically fair, it has never been all that reliable, so hopefully the HP Server will kill 2 birds with a sensible backup regime for my DVD collection, and also act as a central, replicated back up for the main home PCs.

We've lost 2 hard drives in the last year and insufficient backups lost a fair bit of data.

Never mind.  Hopefully the new server will handle this.  However, before I can do that I'm having to shift the contents of the NAS drive over to the Media Center for safe keeping.  That's moving something like 500GB and this brings me to another problem with the Western Digital NAS box which the reviews also mention - IT'S BLOODY SLOW!

So, time to copy everything to the Media Center, and then we can populate the drives on the Media Server from the Media Center and then I can clear the Media Center drives.
