Missing a Trick
Nov. 3rd, 2006 04:51 pmI've not been paying enough attention, if this is possible, to flights. I've discovered that BA have simplified the book and upgrade on miles system in the last 3 months. Essentially, if I plan ahead, I can book WT+ and fly Club for 25,000 miles - given I earn 17,000 for the trip, this means a nett cost of only 8,000 which I could make up by taking a risk on every 3rd trip.
The story so far... back in July I was made an offer I could refuse. I pointed out my problems with the it; salary, package, notice, relocation and role. There was general humming and ahhing and then they came back with a new role but not much else.
Finally, today, we had a conference call with the key players - my boss, his boss and his boss - to discuss.
Basically the results are thus:
1. Salary and Package: The US middle boss says that he can't put a total package value in an offer in case I try to hold them to it. Gosh... really??? why on Earth would I do that??? His boss felt this was a reasonable request on my part and they're actually now going to check with a lawyer. I refuse to believe that US sales people take jobs where the upside isn't spelt out in the offer. If they do, then they are dumb. Anyway, he's going to come back with a revision to meet my needs.
2. Notice - they've offered 12 weeks. I'll accept that.
3. Relocation - I pointed out that the general package; 3 months housing and car plus $10,000 was fine until you took the flights to and from Seattle. They agreed and have offered a flight budget of another $5,000 to cover 2 extra returns. That should work.
4. Role - this has been handled elsewhere although as this is a promotion, and has been sold to me as such I'd like a rise. The middle US boss agreed but countered that as this was now being handled through central group services and group HR he wasn't going near this until they set global pay targets in the new year. I'm pretty much ok with this because the head hunting firm that they used is setting those targets and the CEO is pretty clear on wanting to pay sensible rates.
So... providing the new offer arrives in a timely fashion and represents what I've put here then we're going to Seattle.
Finally.
Still don't quite believe it myself.
