... so, this morning I had to visit the Dentist, who put me on Amoxicilin. Are you alergic to penicilin he asks. No, I say, you gave me Amoxicilin earlier in the year for the infected root. Great, says he and gives me 30 500mg capsules.

Well kiddies, it turns out that in the last 6 months I have become REALLY FRAKING ALERGIC to Penicilin and now have first hand experience of anaphylatic shock.

I took the first 2 caps as directed, finished my lunch, got in the car and noticed that my head itched a little. Then a little more. As I was crossing the 520 it was obviously not something normal, by that stage you're committed to wherever you are going as it is impossible to turn back. So I pushed onto Redmond, walked into my meeting and asked if they knew where the ER was. At this stage was head was bright red and swelling, and some lovely little hives were whelling on my arms and neck - I will assume in other places too.

Quick drive to the ER of the hospital Bill Gates uses, walked into the reception for the ER to be greeted by a fairly horrified looking nurse. "I think I might having an alergic reaction to anti-biotics." I said. She concurred, took basic readings, told the admin person to get out of the way as I had to go and have needles stuck in me immediately. I actually think the nurses were, at that stage, a bit more freeked out that I was. Although, the BP of 178/110 was pretty fucking scary.

So, now I know what Epinephrine is and how they administer it. I know that fitting an IV to a patient with swelling arms is tricky and I also know that my Beta Blockers are definately working because within minutes my BP was at 130/70 which is a lot heathlier a number than it was a week ago.

They kept an eye on me for an hour and that was that.

I've got to avoid that whole family of penicilin for the next 50 or 60 years (or so) and have been given an alternative for the infected tooth. I also have steroids to take for the rest of the week and it has been suggested I could take the antihistamines because they'll help me relax.

M was pretty frantic about it but I assured her I'm a lot better now.

I probably ought to have been more alarmed, but actually I felt reasonably calm through the whole thing. It's an alergic reaction. I am going to hospital. It can easily be treated.

At least it's not peanuts.

Anyway, there you go, another interesting day in Dave's life. Perhaps a tad too interesting eh?

It has been an officially crap day. I did not enjoy the Anaphylatic Shock, I definately don't like those things they put in the back of your hand for an IV and Epineephrine makes you feel like you've had the monster of caffine rushes.

Now the steroids are making me feel both awake and tired at the same time.

I'm off to bed with some water and the latest Karren Traviss book.

I'm taking tomorrow off. Work, dentists, penicillin and anything else similar can get stuffed.

That is all. Night!
