So... That's Not Good...
Oct. 23rd, 2006 09:25 pmSaw a Dentist this morning. The same one who I saw last time. He was not happy with what he saw.
Complaining about British dentistry is something of a sport for US dentists, or at least akin to shooting fish in a barrel. One of the problems was the old NHS payment system and how certain dentists applied it. I went from having 1 filling in 1980 to about 8 in 1981 - we moved house and dentist. Over the years every last one of those fillings has been condemed and replaced. The trouble is they were done badly the second time too, which brings me to the current situation.
One of my teeth broke on Saturday, a "classic break" if that is meant to be any comfort. The problem is the x-ray shows abcesses forming under the roots of both teeth. The dentists suspect the damage is years, maybe a decade old when they probably used uncooled dental drills. The problem was they went deep with the fillings, heated the tooth up and did further damage that builds over time. *sigh*
He's given me a course of anti-biotics for the potential infections and has smoothed off the broken tooth. His feeling is things can be left for a month or two, ideally until I get to the US permanently and he can do something about my teeth in general. The issue as he put it was I've had a lifetime of piecemeal dentistry and it has to stop.
His suspicion is I need at least 2 root canals, 3 new crowns and a proper fitting crown on the other tooth.
*sigh*
The good news, as he put it, in general none of this is serious and the teeth are all fine. They just need a lot of repair work.
The thing that pisses me off about this is I used to have really good teeth, I still do. The only trouble I've had is with old fillings put in by the mad Australian woman we had when we moved to Hoddesdon.
I wish I had somebody to sue.
