Individual Responsibility

This piece from The Reg is quite interesting, and quite true. I've been online since 1996, I could do a Net version of the 4 Yorkshiremen about this. When I first came across Yahoo chat, the servers would tend to fall over if more than about 1200 people used them. It's something like a million+ at any given time now!
Even then I could see that Chat was going to cause problems. It's one of the few genuine USPs that AOL has that they have human moderators policing the Chat Rooms. However, in relation to now, those were much simpler days. The whole Web 2.0 ethos; the Livejournals, MySpaces, Blogs and the like, will make matters harder.
Knowing what I know about living Online - putting it another way, of the last 5 relationships I've had, 3 were started online - I would not allow any kid of mine completely unsupervised access to the Internet. Not that I am likely to have kids but I think the analogy the reg used is quite a good one.
What annoys me is the Mail reader style knee jerks that come with this. Policing the Internet is not the answer, personal responsibility is.
