Obama and the Teleprompter

John Scalzi has a thing for Republicans/Conservatives to talk about the GOP primary.  He doesn't want it to turn into a kick-fest against conservatives over there, but SERIOUSLY, WHAT THE FUCK???? are some of these people on?

One of the charges that keeps coming up is that Obama can't speak without a Teleprompter... thing is, I've watched him debate, I've watched him do townhalls and I watched him kick the entire GOP House Caucus around a room for an hour longer than he needed because he was enjoying it.

Is it just that a certain mindset doesn't actually watch things on the news, or if they do, they don't process it in the same way that my brain does?

Anyway, it bugs me.  Also things that bug me on this general topic:

1 - No, the liberal media didn't do a hatchet job on Herman Cain, he did it to himself.  See also: Newt Gingrinch doesn't seem to have had a problem with infidelity
2 - No, the media didn't go easy on Obama in the primary or election, they really just couldn't find enough to print/say on the subjects that would stick - me?  I'm still waiting for the Michelle Obama "whitey" tape that was going to blow apart the campaign...  yeah... still waiting.  And, on that score, any republican who thinks that the Clinton campaign wouldn't have nuked him from Orbit, is smoking crack
3 - Perry is not a clever guy who can't talk right.  He's a flaming moron who can't talk right and holds one of the least responsible governorships in the entire fracking country
4 - Ron Paul says a lot of things that social liberals agree with, but also holds some policy views that are basically batshit.  No, people, the Gold Standard isn't coming back
5 - No, Barack Obama isn't a Socialist... I know it suits the narrative, but saying something over and over again doesn't make it so, and fairies don't get their wings when a bell rings - if anything he's a moderate conservative... in some respects I'd say he's the most conservative president the country has had since Bush 1
6 - I don't care if Obama has been in the job for 3 years... the mess he got handed was a 10 -15 year mess.  IF and this is the most scary, IF we can actually fix the world economy.  I'm less confident that we can do that than I was a couple of years ago, because vested interests aren't allowing the kind of regulatory fixes that are needed
7 - Oh yes, Obama does understand that you can't balance the books on the backs of the top 1% - but it's a FUCKING start.  Seriously, both sides of the equation have to be dealt with.  Deal with it.

Now I have to go back and be productive again, I just wanted that off my chest.  Thanks for listening.

In some ways Perry is the most fascinating of these to me. Can he really be as dumb as he's coming across right now? I almost hope it's just that he's overwhelmed by the national stage. It's painful to watch.

I agree that Obama is nothing like a socialist, but on domestic policy I don't see any way to argue that he's more conservative than Clinton (who signed NAFTA, DOMA, DADT, Welfare Reform, Three Strikes You're Out, repeal of Glass-Steagal, etc).

Yes but he went for a 1990s GOP Healthcare plan without trying and has run a fairly hawkish foreign policy.

Some of the Clinton stuff like DOMA and DADT I see as a reaction to a more socially conservative time.

"The 1990s GOP Healthcare plan" was what all three major Democratic candidates were running on in 2008, including the "populist" John Edwards. I also don't see Obama's foreign policy as any more hawkish than Clinton's, although I agree that it is hawkish. And I don't think you get to attribute Clinton's conservative moves to the times and not do the same for Obama's. And really for "the times" you should substitute "the Senate", although these days it's the House as well.

Ok, fair enough :)
