Have an Italian beef sandwich for lunch. Also, if you're downtown, Navy Pier is a nice strollable piece of lakefront.

The Museum of Science and Industry is worth a visit - it may be overrun with kids, though.

yes, the architecture baot trip is both fun and a lovely way to orient yourself. As an ER fan I liked riding the El ;-)

We had BBQ in a tiny little place somewhere halfway to Schaumberg (guess who I was seeing) that was fantastic but I remember nothing more of how to find it!
