A few months before the Twilight movies started coming out, I decided that it would be interesting to see Forks.  We read the books (I WISH I hadn't) and headed over to Forks.  As the crow flies it's not all that far from Seattle, but in reality it's a ferry ride and a slow drive on two lane roads.  It was January and we arrived late.  Our hotel had a sign outside saying "Edward doesn't stay here, you're safe."

There's not a lot to say about Forks.  It's poor and fairly remote.  They had a sign in the window of the local diner with the names of the town's residents who were currently DEPLOYED in Iraq and Afghanistan.  There were about 30 names on there.  For a town of a few thousand people to have that many actually on active deployment is kinda scary and reinforced just how poor the place is.

After a day of wandering around the beaches and marveling at the bleak desolation, we headed back into town for a burger.  We were eating the burgers when the owner came over.

"Excuse me?  Are you here about the... you know... the books?"
We grinned and said that we'd wanted to see what the fuss was about.  She sighed and mumbled, "then you better have these."

She gave us a pair of Vampire fangs and walked off.

Quite surreal.

When we were there the town had one, brand new, Twilight theme store.  I understand they have a lot more now, and get a lot more visitors.  While I don't like the books, didn't much like the movies (except as a drinking game), and was incredulous that Meyers only went to Forks AFTER she finished the last book, I must admit that the town needed something, and I am glad for that.  Even if they hate the fact they have to give out those stupid toy fangs with your cheeseburger.
