Goodbye Olympics
Aug. 12th, 2012 01:21 pmI'm not watching the Closing Ceremony, a) because M isn't here at the moment and wants to see it, and b) it'll probably stream badly over our VPN. I will not be watching the NBC coverage tonight because I want to watch the closing ceremony.
Going into this I had mixed feelings. I'm British, we are not a naturally sunny and optimistic people. You try living in that climate for 30+ years and see what it does to you.
I also vetoed all suggestions that we should go home for them because I was of the opinion, based on experience, that a) they would be a bit shit and b) London would be a fucking nightmare.
As it happens, while I think I was right, I am left feeling a little homesick.
I don't remember a previous Olympics really capturing attention like this one. I'm not sure why, but we really pulled it off didn't we? From a quirky and British opening ceremony which didn't try to out do the Chinese but do something different, through the absolutely fucking stunning performance of the British team, through to a well run games in one of the oldest and heavily populated cities on the planet this has been something amazing to watch.
So, well done LCOG, well done Britain. You've done Planet Earth proud.
Kudos.
Boris and Seb Coe are still tossers though.
