Apropos nothing really...
Aug. 2nd, 2012 11:59 pmI just read a chunk of the RaceFail '09 stuff... gosh.
That was really quite the mess there.
I'm not sure I have much to say on it. I thought I did and then thought better of it.
I do need/want to think more on the whole issue of cultural appropriation being racist because it's not something I've put a lot of thought into and there are elements on both sides of the issue that make me feel deeply uncomfortable. Not that that is a bad thing, people should be uncomfortable about such things.
But I am minded of this little number from Avenue Q.
Bad cultural appropriation of my cultures does piss me off royally, therefore, it stands to reason that everybody else gets to feel pissed off too. I'm still parsing what to do with the concept in general because I am also nervous about blocking anybody from writing about anything, no matter how they do it. Because, otherwise, good grief would things get boring quickly. I also don't know what you do about good cultural appropriation - because I am concerned there's an element that wants to be pissed off about that too.
There was a lot in there I agreed with on both sides.
That said, having come to this via the Dogpile last night onto Liz Williams, I don't have a lot of time for the rhetoric of "Requires Hate" because it seems to be an excuse to shit on people from a great height, during which process any actually valid points are lost in the messy squishy sound that occurs when the shit lands.
