After hearing all the ooo's and ahhh's from friends through the afternoon I was quite looking forward to the Olympic opening ceremony. That was before I NBC got their incompetent little mitts over it.

I've just re-watched on the BBC to see what I was missing.  So...

General: the NBC commentators are awful, awful, AWFUL.   Here's some gems:
- "London has become something of a melting pot in recent years..." Er... by recent, you mean the last few hundred?  Then yes.
- "This segment is a tribute to Tim B(mumble) Lee, I've never heard of him myself, they're claiming he invented the World Wide Web"

Then, in order to fit in the ads, they edited the hell out of it:
- The music section was cut to crap, including taking out Punk and Ska entirely
- A lesbian kiss was removed on some NBC regions
- Staging videos which explained the Tim Berners Lee segment were removed making it look really just fucked up
- The section with the MV Windrush wasn't explained at all marking the arrival of West Indian immigrants in London
- The opening sequence which started at the source of the Thames was cut so it looked like a random comical romp rather that actually something pertinent to a London games
- The FIRST women athletes to compete for Saudi Arabia were cut completely from the entrance coverage

Finally, a segment which included a memorial to the victims of the 7/7 attacks was removed and replaced with an interview with Michael Phelps...  SERIOUSLY.

I think I'll wait to watch the closing on the BBC...

I can't begin to imagine the fuss if the BBC had done that.
