More random-ish Worldcon thoughts...
Aug. 23rd, 2011 10:48 amI must say that while my sample is fairly small, that was one of the most enjoyable Worldcon's I've been to. And glancing at the usual suspects my feeling is being echoed by plenty of people who've a much broader range of experience than I. There was oodles of good programing, but I missed much of it, mostly because I was usually engaged in something more enjoyable. The "bar" was somewhat odd for a Brit, but they served awesome, if spectacularly strong, beer and I found myself there on several occasions having extremely long and pleasant conversations.
ianmcdonaldyou know what I'm talking about.
I had planned to do less work in the evenings but actually quite enjoyed myself helping to ensure that the London party bar ran smoothly - but a special nod must and should go to the Klingons down the corridor who really had pushed the boat out with their "black hole" party.
I've calculated I made something like 50 litres of Pimm's, all of which was drunk and, I suspect, we could have been serving Pimm's even longer if we'd had it.
I met a lot of interesting new people, including a bunch of British Fen that I'd previously managed to miss having much to do with, so into that column go Alice Lawson, Steve Cooper and John Dowd.
Memories that will stick - annoucing at the Match Game; moderating a couple of excellent panels where the audeince were really left wanting more; trying and failing not to be the only man/big mouth on the Doctor Who panel; running around with jug after jug of Pimm's, watching the effect of Pimm's on many, many ladies falling under the spell of various OTHER Brits (M if you're reading this!) and finding myself in a deep and mostly coherant conversation on potential British future Hugo novel winners with DUFF winner Dave Cake at about 5am...
As a few of you might have noticed, the run up to the con was pretty fraught - with a lot of back and forth on the app. While it wasn't perfect, I'll admit that it was pretty useful at the convention and we're intending that the source is made available to all conventions moving forward - we do want to work out how to handle an offline database though, as that was by far and away the biggest problem. That said, at the con we got pretty uniformly good feedback, which was nice for the ego.
And, while on the subject of ego-boo - a huge thank you to all the people who came up to me to thank me for doing various things around the con. Most of you really did honestly work harder than I did, but it is awfully nice all the same.
So what next? I would really love to do more Convention's, and I was asked to attend several others over the next couple of years as we move towards London in 2014 turning into the awesome convention I think it will. But reality is, I'm starting my own business and until that starts to settle down I'm rather constrained on what I can do. I will, probably, be in Chicago next year, but less likely to go to San Antonio... I can see Westercon's in my future, especially Westercon-66... but as for other things, we'll have to see....
Oh and
fringefaanyou REALLY need to do the Chunga MADE all these fan winners Hugo edition!
