The Year So Far...
Jan. 11th, 2011 10:52 amI need a clone. I need 2 clones, and a lot of money...
I may have mentioned that we had a reasonably strong end to the year. We decided on a slightly different approach for the business in the middle of last year and spent a chunk of the next few months gearing up for it. The long and short of that being, it's going rather well from an interest perspective.
We had our first "call back" from a VC at the end of last year and I've another VC meeting lined up. We've also had an improbably strong CES. Lots of great meetings, lots of networking meetings with people that all went rather well and I'm sitting here looking at the pile of things I have to do and whibbling slightly.
The project that was looking like a catastrophe in early December got back on track, delivered on time and was accepted into the OVI store yesterday. The follow on project that was dead in December has now come back in a different guise and we've got another 2-3 projects in the pipeline that stand a realistic chance of closing this year.
CES itself was interesting. We're not technically in the consumer electronics space, we provide technology which can be of use to CE companies. However, we had a lot of interest in the platform and the solution. We also had a lot of generosity which was surprising and nice to have. In the past I've been the one with the expense account and the company credit card. It's been quite an adjustment to make moving away from that. So it came as a wonderful surprise for several old associates and a new partner to insist that they pay for everything. In one case this involved a lot of money.
CES felt busier than I've ever seen it, which was interesting because it didn't actually feel particularly innovative. I'd guess and the hotel and taxi people I spoke to concurred that there were about 25-30% more people than last year which made it insane around the city. My iPhone was basically an iPod, the WiFi coverage was spotty and slow and generally you could get a taxi, a seat or anything resembling space. Through all that though, it was interesting to see a more human side of Vegas come through. The hotel workers and the taxi drivers were pleased to see us and in such numbers. I lost count of the number of times I was thanked for my business and for coming back to them...
Anyway, I have follow up emails to write, I have to re-work the financial model and then I have to re-do the pitch deck...
Later all...
