The last 10 years meme...
Dec. 30th, 2009 05:34 pm Well then, let's think about this...
I spent Dec 31st 1999 quietly at home with the then girlfriend, now wife, and
pmcray in Surbiton. We ate Thai food and drank Champagne and scotch. I was working for a crappy recruitment consultancy in Walton on Thames doing IT recruitment, M was working in the City on an evening shift.... I was still writing and sending stuff in for rejection letters :)
Then...
* Joined a start up - sold the startup
* Got Married (twice, long story)
* Moved to the US
* 911
* Moved back to the UK
* Lived at home with mum (best not think about that)
* Moved to Bath
* Became a frequent flyer, topping out at 250,000 miles (ish) in 2006
* Flew around the world twice (Westward both times)
* Traveled all over the world and did a LOT of business
* Cracked selling into some of the largest technology companies in the world
* Gained about 20kgs, lost about 5 of it...
* Sold a house in Preston
* Bought a flat in London
* Lived in London, rather than in or around it
* Moved to the US (again)
* Got a Green Card
* Became a dog owner, then become one again
* Started my own company
* Had a significant birthday event
Had many amazing adventures, some great meals, some fantastic drinks and have enjoyed getting access to so many new toys that the decade has given me.
So, 2010... The 00s started with me in a pretty dull job which would not rate in any career advisors guide. A decade later I'm fatter, that's a fact, but I am much happier. I've had an amazing decade really. There have been ups and downs, but generally mostly up. I'm looking forward to the teens. I've a great little business growing (I hope) and, best of all, it's a huge amount of fun doing it.
Tomorrow night we're going out to a great restaurant overlooking Elliott Bay with friends. We'll have food, drink and then make our weary way home to the puppies and a new decade. The only sad thing, thinking ahead that it's unlikely that both of the puppies will make the journey through the next decade with us. But we might get lucky.
Happy New Year all!
