Life with the Home Server
Mar. 21st, 2009 04:26 pmWell, the integration of the Home Server into the network is proceeding.
The back up utility seems to work extremely well and the mirroring service between the main household PC media folders and the Server happened extremely quickly. Given that this was about 50GB of data, it was backed up and duplicated in about an hour. Now the server software is working on the main PC backup, which is taking some time but seems to be progressing well.
The server comes with an iTunes music folder and a music back up utility, so the music is all done AND can be accessed from any machine.
My core problem remains the WD NAS box, which is just awful. I finally managed to get my DVD collection off it today, copied to the HDD on the Media Center. That took forever, the transfer rate to and from the NAS box peaks out at 7MB/s so the whole thing took about 8 hours in total. In contrast, dumping the movies back onto the Server took about an hour with transfer rates around 45MB/s. Vast improvement!
The last activity is my general saved TV folder, which is about 80GB, so I'll be pulling that off next and then putting back onto the server. Then the NAS can be retired and I can put all the equipment back where it's meant to be.
There will be some housekeeping to do and I need to integrate the laptop into the network and get it backed up. This might be harder than it seems because I can't get the Media Center to access the Server Control Panel yet. But so far, I'm pretty impressed.
