So, a wasted evening later I now know the following about Vista 64bit.

IT DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY.

So, I installed my preferred codec pack (the CCCP - yeah, I know it's free but it does seem to work) and ran my standard tests.  Media Player - handing DivX and MKV - no problems, even the big ones.

Media Center - handling DivX etc...  MKV - crunch.  Er?  Try again.  Crunch.

Google it.

Ah.

It seems that in the 64bit version of Vista they use 32bit codecs for the in OS media player but 64 bit for the Media Center Media Player.  This means that basically there isn't a sensible way of getting MKV support in 64 bit Media Player.

This isn't a train wreck on my desktop unit but it would be on the new Media Center I'm building, so I'll be making damn sure I only install the 32bit version of Vista on that puppy.
