Up Up and Away
Jan. 15th, 2008 12:58 amAfter a lot of flying in fully loaded and underpowered Boeing buses, it was fun to sit in an empty A321 on the runway at Heathrow with an obvious mission to get up and out of the holding stack in a couple of minutes. An impressively short time after kicking back on the throttles we were airborn and taking a hair raising 180 degree turn to head out East to Sweden.
BA had oversold the flight back to London, but only in Club and First and were looking for people to go via Vancouver. Yeah, right.
Additionally, as I've often found, you can pick friends but you can't pick the bastards you sit next to on planes. Got this guy in his 50s, moved to the US 30 years ago and now lives on 80 acres in Idaho (the only state where GWB is above 50% in his approval ratings).
We were discussing where to live and he said, "of course, you could retire to England, but by that time your wife would have to wear a Burkha with all those immigrants! It's disgusting..." [insert rants of your choice about immigrants, except those hard working poles who're white so it's ok of course etc etc etc]
Of course, explaining that this is, in fact, bollocks, doesn't really help.
I took the coward's way out and turned on my Bose Noise Cancelling headphones and tuned him out.
