In my quest to resolve my media consumption issues I wanted to ask the following:

Due to the lack of suitable cable in my house I've struggled to find sensible ways to serve media to my living room.  I'm leaning towards a media streaming box but the reality is I can't stream stuff over the power line network at bit rates which will play HD content properly.

Currently my data disks are attached to my main server which for various reasons has to be downstairs.

I'm thinking of getting a Network data drive and moving to the following architecture:

Downstairs: Main box, DSL modem, router attached to powerline network box, main pc connected to router with Cat cable.

Upstairs: Powerline box - router - media streamer - network data drive

Am I right in my assumption that once set up, the media streamer should "see" the network data drive on the network and be able to stream via the local router over cable and not have to worry about the power line stuff?

Then all I need to do is copy media files on the network drive which might take a little longer than locally over fire wire but it will remove a bottleneck.

So it seems I'm going to San Diego for the day tomorrow.  Yay.
