Interesting stuff, obviously quite US centric. I've always felt that I come from a solid lower-middle class background. My mother was brought up Working Class but her parents moved into management and sent her to Grammar School. My father came from a quite wealthy family in Ireland although his Dad basically lost the family money quite early on.
Being the youngest of 3 by a long margin also had an impact on some of the stuff I got to do that my older siblings didn't. By the time I was 10, Dad was a Detective Chief Superintendent which is pretty senior and he made Commander when I was 11 so he was earning something like £25,000 a year in 1980 which translates into anything from £75K to £140K a year in today's money. Of course the massive MI he had in 1981 had an impact on that, he retired pretty well provided for and didn't really want for anything during the next 15 years and Mum is pretty well looked after pension wise too.
