Tech Challenge of the Day
Jul. 17th, 2007 01:09 pmIn lieu of doing some work, of which I have already done much today, I have been trying to figure out why the TV Guide On Screen (TVGOS) service on my TV doesn't work.
I've been curious about this since I came to the conclusion that the cable service offered by Millenium Digital Media (MDM) was verily a pile of sh1te. The problem has been it didn't work when I bought the TV and still doesn't seem to be working. I've not paid much attention to it because we've been using the DVR features of the cable box. But I got curious yesterday and started playing with cables.
So, over-the-air, we get the HD digital channels and a bunch of other stuff. The digital HD stuff is fine, the other stuff isn't. We also get basic cable out of the splitter into the digital cable box. Ah-ha, I thought, that should crack it. Well, no, apparently it doesn't. So I've done some Googleling around and found that this is a common problem. First fix I'm trying is a difference Seattle area Zip Code. I was using 98121, but I've decided to try 98101 (which seems to be the city centre zip - any other suggestions?). After a few days of that, I'll try something else.
You can also look at the guide debug data using the code (753159852) from the setup menu. I'm still trying to work out what all this means, but the current concern is the system doesn't appear to be finding a download channel.
I'll post updates as we go along.
In other news, the Quicktime codecs used for Video in iTunes (which I think is actually a H.264) are a pile of crud too.
