It lives!!!!
Apr. 6th, 2007 11:55 pmAfter much, well, dicking about on my part frankly, I have got my media centre working again. I tried to run it on the internal video card, because I had the right cables for a VGA input to the TV, only after downloading all the drivers (a frightning experience with a built in Video Card of unknown provenance - thank you Interweb) I found that the card didn't have the guts to run Media Centre.
This was interesting, because I had assumed the core WM engine for Media Centre was the same as the XP one. DivX files would play on the XP media player and hang the Media Centre. Much scratching of my head and consulting discussion groups ensued.
In the end, I did what I probably ought to have done first. Went to Fry's and bought an $11 DVI > VGA adaptor. Plugged the old video card in, rebooted and bingo, one media centre. It doesn't have the PVR functionality anymore but we have the HD DVR from the cable company. It also gives us region free DVD playback. Only decision now is whether or not I bother to install the 5.1 suround sound audio card.
At least now we have a comfortable way of watching TV again.
