An Open Letter...
Nov. 20th, 2006 09:16 amDear Apple,
Ok, guys, I get it. You really really do know your stuff when it comes to industrial design. I dearly love my iPod. It's small, it's sleak, it's shiny - it fits in my pocket and is great for long flights.
However, could you explain to the dyslexic goat that you appear to use to design your user interfaces that they need to seek a new career path? iTunes 6.0 was bad enough, you sell lots of products with different memory footprints - why the hell did you design your only sensible sync options (that those of use without Phds in advanced physics can work) for a 10 TB monster device? And not my humble little 4GB nano?
I'd just got the hang of your highly unreliable and unintuitive Podcast sync when you change it. Previously, you could, almost sync podcasts, on every other day with the wind behind you, but where is the manual option that allowed you to do this AND put the podcast into the podcasts folder on the UI? Where hmmm?
Only now with iTunes 7.0 even that has gone and I've had to spend 30 minutes working out which random confluence of settings allow me to sync podcasts. Only now you've also taken away my ability to randomly select some for Sync, you've made it all date and play based. Thanks guys. I actually do think I can work out which Slackerpedia podcast I want to take with me to Seattle thanks. I'm a grown up, I can even tie my own shoelaces.
Enough is enough, MSFT might have some poor design and the gods alone know what they were thinking when they spec'd the Zune, but at least their UI makes a modicum of sense on the desktop.
Dave
