See it. It is good.

I do hope that Chris Priest was well looked after. He gave a talk at the Preston SF Group just after he finished writing it and it was one of the top talks we had (probably 3rd after Ray Harryhausen and Nick Park) - and this is a reasonably good adaptation.

Although it is about 6 years since I read the book and I was hazy on some of the details.

Good performances all round, although Scarlet Johanssen's "cockney" wobbled into Bridget Jones territory a couple of times. Probably not an essential cinema experience but a definate "must see".

WTF is it about American hotels (and some appartments) with the lack of ceiling lights attached to switches in the room. My bedroom has the bedside lamp wired to the light switch, so if you've turned off the light when it was dark, and not turned it back on again during the day, you can't walk into the bedroom at night and have a light come on from the switch.

It's DUMB, DUMB, DUMB.

Our old San Francisco appartment also had no lights in the living room. The lamps were pluged into sockets which were driven from the wall switches. I just don't get that. I really really don't.

I had big plans for today having got up at 9am, I was to go to the gym, then go shopping. This afternoon I'm meeting some Seattle Fans and then buying my engineering team Mexican food at the exotic and slightly weird Mama's Mexican Kitchen and then they're letting me beat them at Poker ;)

That was/is the plan. The gym I managed. The shopping has been a flop and I've spent the last few hours farting around with bits of work and other things like baths and generally arsing around. Anyway, as part of my new keep fit plan, I'm going to walk up the road to The Elysian and meet the Fen. Its a little under a mile up hill and I have a fully loaded iPod to keep me company.

Still not sure if I can manage to be in the Elysian and not drink beer. I'll see. So far so good, and even after a week in the US I can actually feel my jeans are fitting better. Beer is a serious weakness of mine so I'll need to watch that. While I can go out and drink 4 or 5 pints plus of beer in an evening without thinking much of it, a V&T or similar isn't as interesting. With a glass of soda water I appear to be able to make something like a single Vodka Tonic last as long as a beer and I don't feel like drinking so many of them. I've never actually been a huge spirits fan, but beer is yummy. I'll see how I go.
