Japan Day 2
Jan. 25th, 2006 12:48 amOriginally the plan for today was a trip to Nara, where I am told there are some fantastic temples. I'd probably have been stuck in a Bland Meeting Room(tm) though. Anyway, that's all changed, the client are coming to Tokyo to meet us. I guess I'll have to leave Nara until we go to the Worldcon.
Got an early night last night. Had a beer in the main bar, which, true to the form of the standard Asian Rim hotel, had weird music being played by a couple of muscians. Last night appeared to be a mixture which sounded like incidental Bond music played with Harp and Double Bass. I kid ye not. Then, not sure what to eat I had a noodle dish in the hotel restaurant and then hit the sack around 10pm - I had a good night's sleep. At this rate, I might manage to lose some weight on this trip rather than drink on another kg.
The strange bar seems to be a feature of Western Hotel Chains in Asia. If you've seen Lost in Translation you'll have some idea of what it's like.
I'm not sure what the dinner plans are for tonight, somebody mentioned Karoke but I hope they were winding me up on that. Not sure that Japan is ready for my vocal talent. So, back to planning the afternoon meetings and the meeting on Friday in Korea.
On the subject of meetings, we're preparing for the Teleco industry annual beanfeast - 3GSM which for the first time is in Barcelona. Basically, were are talking a Con for around 30,000 Telco sales reps and executives. It's one of the few times that everybody in is the same place at the same time, so there are a lot of meetings to be had. They are twinned with a lot of drinking too. Good job, that with respect to drinking at the moment I'm certainly at my "fighting" weight. The core problem is arranging schedules for multiple parties in multiple countries.
I've got something like 25 meetings to attend over the course of the 4 days - the problem is actually, there are really only 3 days, and meeting space is at a premium. Nobody commits to anything until the last moment. So, I have a vision that we'll still be trying to fit everything into the programme grid at the event. It really is like herding cats.
Anyway, time for coffee...
