Watched the first episode of Morgan (Supersize Me!) Spurlock's new documentary on More4 (Hot damn, I like that channel).
Interesting. The usual problems with anything like this. There is an end to it but Spurlock and his Girlfriend seemed to get deeply into it. However, much like Matthew Parris on World in Action 25 years ago, there were some issues. Spurlock himself pointed out that both he and his Girlfriend were white, educated, articulate (middle class didn't get mentioned) and therefore had no problems with handling money, budgeting and so forth.
The most frightening thing was the amount of money they had to live on and the reliance on charity if you are on Minimum wage in the US. I think it was $5.15, although they were both earning more like $7(ish) - that's still not a lot of money.
Like with most of these things the most shocking interaction was with the medical services. Both of them had to see a doctor, he had sprained a wrist, she had a urinary infection which involved visits to ER. The bills were over $1,500 for the brief visits. He tried to get to a free clinic but as the problem wasn't life threatening he was unable to be seen.
That just amazes me.
Still, it was an interesting show and I'll catch some of the others.
