Charge Card Fees...
Aug. 19th, 2004 04:54 pmThis month is the annual fee time for my Am-Ex. It's quite a lot of money and it always takes me by surprise. I always ask myself why I bother to keep it - apart from it's a very pretty colour. And then have to remind myself of the reasons why it's worth over £100 a year. Here's some...
1. No Limit, and no silly security software. Most of my co-workers end up having their cards refused if they travel a lot. It doesn't take much travel to rack up £5000+ in expenses in a couple of weeks and if you travel between several countries and the UK in a short period, Visa are great at stopping the card. I've never had this happen.
2. The extra's. Complete travel insurance regardless of how I booked the travel. Free entry to airport business lounges at pretty much any airport. Automatic "gold" status in a whole bunch of car hire and other loyalty programmes.
3. Good rewards programme - got a new VCR last year, 28" widescreen TV should come this year
4. Handy emergency phone line. Everything from hotel bookings, restuarants to gifts - very handy for customer entertaining and the like.
I suspect this is useless for the majority of people, and frankly, if I didn't travel and do the job I do it would be a waste of money for me. However, its useful to have this stuff.
