Some more thoughts on the East...
Mar. 12th, 2003 03:40 amI've just for a walk around and I'm about to go electrical goods shopping - I doubt I'll buy anything as I haven't got much money to through around, but I'm curious to see what toys there are here. I'd like a USB memory stick, I've been in half a dozen meetings where it would have come in handy as Infra Red at the end of the day simply doesn't work.
I popped to the local 7-11 to buy some Tea for M. And actually found the flower petal chineese tea she is after, which is cool, but it is a little disconcerting walking around here. I stand out a bit on a UK street, but I'd say I'm 50% larger than pretty much everybody else here. It is peculiar to be a road crossing and realise that the tallest person in the crowd barely comes above your elbow.
Across from the hotel is the new world's tallest building, an upside down Chinese pagoda of green glass - quite an odd looking building, the scale of which isn't aparent until you get out of the city centre. Everthing is a picture of growing wealth and confidence. Taiwan technology and manufacturing companies account for a vast proportion of the world's electronics design and manufacture - especially in the mobile phone sector. The traffic is astounding, Taxi's are pretty much the only way to get around - I certainly wouldn't drive here, the motion of a vehicle across traffic lanes and roads seems pretty random, then there are the thousands of motor scooters which weave between them. Crossing a road, even with a green light is pretty nerve wracking. It's like Italy on acid.
I managed to leave my digital camera at home, and for the first time I actually find myself thinking about getting a camera phone.
Based on what I saw at a potential client's yesterday, I know just which one I want too...
Still, it will good to get home, even if it is 20 hours of travel to get there.
